Would understanding the interactions of building systems and their effects on home performance assist you in your position or your business? Earning the Building Science Principles certificate is your first step into the world of energy-efficient home performance.
Building science demonstrates how various components of the home interact to affect the home’s overall performance. Understand the relationship between the building envelope, heating, A/C, insulation, mechanical ventilation, lighting, appliances, and other systems of the home. Learn how all of these systems affect the comfort, health, and safety of occupants and the durability of the home. This non-technical BPI certificate is the first step toward understanding & improving whole-house building performance. Perfect for salespeople, admin personnel, architects, or anyone who needs to know about building science, but may never need to perform testing.
The state of Illinois enforces IECC 2018 for new homes, which requires duct and envelope tightness testing. In addition to existing BPI and RESNET certifications, Illinois created this new certification specifically qualified to test duct and envelope tightness. Our training covers these as well as various other training topics.
The Duct & Envelope Tightness Certification was designed by the Midwest Home Performance Association as a bridge between building professionals and Energy Raters. This 1-day training course will introduce you to the skills necessary to perform the diagnostic testing on new homes and ensure you meet the current IECC standards.
Insight offers an innovative 6-day training class that combines both the BPI Building Analyst & BPI Envelope Professional training and testing during the same course. This class covers the principles of Building Science, methodology of Home Performance Testing, and Retrofit Contracting.
The classroom training prepares you for the BPI written exams, while field training in three test homes prepares you for the BPI field exams. Course materials, access to equipment, mentoring, and testing fees are included. Have your business listed as a BPI Accredited Contractor and take advantage of the growing demand for qualified performance.
Save time, money, and effort by testing your own work!

Prevention is the key to avoiding Carbon Monoxide hazards in the home. Each year, thousands of people in the United States become ill or die from CO poisoning. Without full CO safety and combustion diagnostics, there is no way of knowing whether a system is safe or efficient. Proper Combustion Safety Testing protects both the homeowner and contractor. Insight’s 1-day training course will provide you with the skills necessary to properly identify and inspect combustion appliances such as furnaces, space heaters, and water heaters that present potential health and safety hazards.
Learn to discover potential health/safety problems before and after the Retrofit process. Earn Continuing Education Units for the Building Analyst or HERS Rater Certifications.
Has it been a while since you’ve performed a BPI Energy Audit on a house? If you need refresher training or are looking to earn additional BPI CEUs, this is a great BPI training opportunity! You can join one of Insight’s Field Proctors at the home of one of their customers or one of yours.
Insight’s proctor will provide any necessary test equipment and will guide you in testing the home. This evaluation will follow the BPI 1200 standards and will include generating a Home Energy Score and actionable work scope.
This course will consist of following the Home Performance Testing Procedure of completing a Homeowner Interview, an Exterior Walk-around, an Interior Walk-through, an Attic/Crawlspace Inspection, and inspecting the mechanical equipment. Then the class will test for gas leaks, perform applicable combustion safety testing, and measure & evaluate mechanical ventilation. Building infiltration testing will include blower door testing, infrared surveying, zone-pressure testing, and pressure panning. Finally, there will be data gathering for generating a Home Energy Score.
FOR CERTIFICATION: Your completed Home Energy Score and a prioritized work-scope will be submitted and evaluated in order to complete the training and earn BPI CEUs.
In Illinois, a weatherized home must receive a final inspection by a QCI certified individual. The goals of this training course are to teach you the basic principles and techniques of proper Weatherization Quality Control Inspections. Our training class will cover the Quality Control Inspection process as a check and balance system in the areas of In-Progress Inspections and Final Quality Inspections of the Weatherization work with regard to various topics.
You must have BPI approval to take this class and the exams!
If you are interested in a career as a professional air sealing technician or insulation installer, this course is for you. This 5-day hands-on course covers the house as a system, insulation types, performance and installation, air sealing basics, dense-pack training, and work scopes.
We will explore these and other issues and show how uncontrolled airflow can be the common link among many problems in homes. Air sealing solutions will also be presented. While “homes have to breathe”, we will discuss what that means in a practical sense rather than it being a justification for sloppy installations and poor assemblies.
Ventilation is used to manage moisture and heat in attics and crawlspaces, yet most ventilation is undersized and poorly incorporated. As many as 4 different trades must coordinate on a new home to properly ventilate the attic. A lack of coordination results in most attics being poorly ventilated – leading to mold growth and structural deterioration. While attics and crawlspaces are physically connected to a home, the air, moisture, and pollutants in these spaces should not be exchanged with the rest of the home. The attic and crawlspace ventilation must be separate from the fresh air exchange to the living space.
