BLOWER DOOR TEST
A blower door test (building leakage, building infiltration, etc.) determines the leakiness of a home. As the fan pulls air out of the home, outside air is sucked in through the gaps, cracks, and holes. Viewing the walls, floors, and ceilings with an infrared camera while the fan is running can then show you where all those leaks are. Be sure all overhangs, offsets, and chases are air sealed.
The Illinois adopted 2018 IECC (International Energy Conservation Code) limits new home air leakage to 4 air changes per hour (4 ACH50) with the blower door running. Performed by an approved 3rd party, like Insight, the home can be tested for leaks as soon as it has 6 closed sides (foundation, walls/windows/doors, and ceiling) but definitely before you submit for the certificate of occupancy.

WHEN IS THIS TEST PREFORMED?
A Blower Door Test is typically done after a home is completed, just before final inspection and receipt of the certificate of occupancy is granted, though earlier testing is possible and recommended for inexperienced builders or complex homes.
